A stellar 2007–2008 for Ainadamar

The 2007–2008 season has been a great success for Osvaldo Golijov's opera Ainadamar, demonstrating the work's broad appeal and artistic strength, and further establishing its place within the opera repertory. The season featured over 30 performances of four different productions in nine different cities around the world. The venues/productions ranged from opera companies to festival productions to concert versions with orchestra to conservatory productions featuring student performers.

Ainadamar was featured in the season repertory of the Staatstheater Darmstadt, in a new production directed by Mei Hong Lin, featuring Katrin Gerstenberger, Allison Oakes, Sonja Borowski-Tudor, Aki Hashimoto and Margaret Rose Koenn in various performances. In total, there were 11 performances of this production from November through June. Opera Boston presented the established Peter Sellars production featuring the original cast of Dawn Upshaw, soprano; Kelley O'Connor, mezzo-soprano; and Jessica Rivera, soprano.

In its Australian premiere, Ainadamar was featured as the Adelaide Festival's opening event, in a new production directed by Graemme Murphy.

The opera has also shown its flexibility in the orchestral concert venue, with performances by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (four concerts), the city of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (two concerts) and the Phoenix Symphony (two concerts).

With its original roots in the opera program at Tanglewood, Ainadamar has continued to be popular in the conservatory environment. This season, productions were put up at the Indiana University School of Music and at the Curtis Institute of Music.
